10 Actors Who Turned Down Star Trek
5. Sean Connery Strayed Away From Sybok
Of all the Star Trek movies, The Final Frontier was undoubtedly one of the most poorly received, which probably means that the late great Sean Connery was wise to keep his name away from the role.
It was no secret that the first choice to play the role of Spock's half-brother Sybok was Connery. According to the Star Trek Encyclopaedia (vol.2 p. 288), the name Sha Ka Ree was even alleged to have been an allusion to the Bond actor. However, Garfield Reeves-Stevens would refute this in the DVD commentary, confirming that it was a play on Shangri-La.
So why did Connery turn it down? The legendary actor is actually very well known for turning down a tonne of iconic movie parts, mostly because he had trouble understanding the scripts. However, unlike roles such as Gandalf and Morpheus, Connery was open to the offer but ended up passing it up to appear as Henry Jones in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
It's safe to say that he made the right decision here, as this role as the father of the beloved Indiana Jones was well-received, and the movie was undoubtedly a bigger success than Star Trek Five.
