10 Actors Who Turned Down Star Trek
3. Matt Damon Declined Fathering Kirk
J.J Abrams Star Trek reboot breathed new life into the property, and although fans had to see all of their favourites recast, the new actors did a wonderful job of honouring the past whilst changing for the future.
One of the most memorable performances that happened to be incredibly brief was that of George Kirk, the father of our lead, James T. Kirk. The relatively unknown Chris Hemsworth played the role and made a significant impact, but the part was first offered to someone else.
The creator of Lost - Abrams - originally wanted Matt Damon to play George Kirk. It was thought that this cameo role would benefit from a high-profile performer, possibly to make his quick departure all the more shocking. But sadly, Damon turned the offer away as it seems he was too busy at the time.
In an interview with MTV Abrams claimed that Damon declined the offer "in the most gracious and understandable and logical of reasons.". While the specifics as to what kept him away have never been fully revealed, it's likely that his work on the Oscar contenders True Grit and Invictus played a part.
Thankfully Hemsworth was a real find, and having an unknown in the role was the right choice.
