Kurtwood Smith's most recognisable Star Trek role is as Annorax in the Star Trek: Voyager 2 parter Year of Hell. A brilliant temporal scientist, he spent centuries attempting to restore his planet to glory after a devastating event. Annorax's terrifying use of time technology to restore his perfect timeline led to the erasure of many civilizations and brought him into direct conflict with the Voyager crew.

Years earlier, Smith had donned layers of prosthetics and a wispy white wig and fake beard to play the Federation President in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. It's his character who is eventually targetted by the Starfleet and Klingon conspiracy to destabilise the peace process between the Federation and the Empire.

It was a much less substantial role than Annorax with Kurtwood Smith telling the official Voyager magazine that:

"It wasn't really an acting role. I had to achieve a quick sense of presence and then be shot at."

The Enterprise crew foiled the assassination attempt, leading to peace with the Klingons. Smith would later appear in an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine alongside his Star Trek 6 co-star Rene Auberjonois. Again, he was under heavy prosthetics, playing the Cardassian security officer who preceded Odo on the space station.
