10 All-Time Great Netflix Original Series
6. The Crown
Queen Elizabeth II is 91 years old and, as it stands right now, the longest reigning monarch in the world. For many people both in the UK and around the world, she feels like more or less of a constant, a presence that has always been there and always will be.
The practical result of this is that it's somehow difficult to think of her as she was when the events of The Crown took place, a shockingly young woman being pulled in different directions by competing interests and very much still trying to figure out her role in everything, as a woman, a wife, and a queen.
Claire Foy is incandescent as the young, uncertain monarch, Matt Smith steps into role of the bumbling, prideful, but ultimately good-hearted Prince Philip effortlessly, and John Lithgow plays the hell out of Winston Churchill, despite being a shockingly unlikely choice for the political giant in decline. It's classy, smart, and well-made: the pitch perfect period drama.
