10 Alternate Universe Characters That Were Better Than The Original

1. Old Man Logan

Appearing as part of the on-going Wolverine comic book, Old Man Logan featured a possible future where the assorted Marvel villains had finally got their act together and defeated the heroes once and for all. While the destruction of groups such as the Avengers and the Fantastic Four weren€™t shown in any great detail, the villains€™ method of getting rid of the X-Men was particularly cruel. On the night of the attack, a group of about forty villains launched an assault on the Xavier Institute. Wolverine, unable to find his teammates, responds in his typical over-the-top manner and kills every criminal in sight in order to ensure the safety of the school€™s children. It€™s only after the last villain dies that Wolverine realises that the whole thing is an illusion created by Mysterio, and that he has, in fact, just murdered the other X-Men.

Old Man Logan cut Wolverine down to size and created a version of the character that was, for once, both physically and emotionally vulnerable. He is trapped in a world that is run by supervillains, living with the guilt of his actions while trying to provide for his family. While he retains his healing factor, the 'Wolverine' persona is, for all intents and purposes, dead. In the whole series, Logan only pops his claws once, and it was nice to see a version of the character that didn€™t just charge straight into a fight for a change.

The character is set to return in Marvel€™s Secret Wars crossover, after which he will be transplanted into the main Marvel continuity.

With a (nearly) useless degree in English literature and a personal trainer qualification he's never used, Freddie spends his times writing things that he hopes will somehow pay the rent. He's also a former professional singer, and plays the saxophone and ukulele. He's not really used to talking about himself in the third person, and would like to stop now, thanks.
