The Temporal Cold War storyline from Enterprise portrayed a conflict between various factions from the future visiting the past to change history in their favour.

The special features for a release of Enterprise's first season included a segment called Star Trek Time Travel: Temporal Cold Wars And Beyond, in which Brannon Braga explained that the Temporal Cold War was added because the studio wanted to make the show more 'futuristic', given that all of their 22nd century tech was outdated compared to all previous Star Trek shows.

While the Temporal Cold War is really compelling and beloved by many fans, this reasoning is frankly ridiculous. The whole point of making Enterprise a prequel was to tell the story of humanity's earliest treks into space. Fans loved seeing older versions of classic technology and early interactions with the species we all know and love.

By trying to make a prequel more futuristic than previous Trek shows, it was difficult for Enterprise to forge it's own identity. Braga later stated in the special features that the Temporal Cold War was a 'nifty idea', but 'probably would have worked better as a separate show'.
