Star Wars under Disney has been rather bumpy to put it mildly. Things were initially looking good with positive reception for The Force Awakens and Rogue One, but it was not to last. The Last Jedi was despised by fans, Rise of Skywalker by everyone, and Solo was a commercial failure despite being a solid film, things were looking desperate.

Enter Jon Favreau. Tasked with creating the first live action Star Wars entry to Disney's new universe, he was under serious pressure to deliver a miracle. Not only did he deliver said miracle, but he made it look easy in the process. The first episode of The Mandalorian is one of the best TV pilots ever made. It gives you just enough details to understand what's happening, while withholding enough to pique curiosity. The lead character is badass, enigmatic and hints at the Mandalorian culture so entrenched in the universe but rarely explored. The story itself is a beautifully simple one, and The Child has quickly become the internet's favourite character despite never speaking a word.

Favreau was tasked with a miracle, and yet before the first episode even ends you can see he has made something special. The Mandalorian is the best Star Wars has to offer, and it begins with this perfect first episode.
