10 Amazing First Episodes Of Brilliant TV Series
7. Castlevania - Witchbottle
The most pleasant surprise to emerge from 2019; Few people ever really expect an adaptation of a video game to be anything more than half hearted fan service. Castlevania Is anything but, it takes inspiration from storylines, characters and imagery from the games yes, but it constructs them is such a fantastic way as to surpass all of them in storytelling.
From the moment that soon to be wife Lisa knocks on Dracula's door and demands medical training, and he reacts with amusement and acceptance, you know that this show is something special. Dracula isn't just the bland face of demonic evil he usually is, he is a nuanced character with depth and emotions. The show excellently constructs a narrative that he is the reactive evil, furious at the church for burning his wife. Although he becomes the primary antagonist and seeks to murder the human race, you feel for him as he does so.
This is gloriously demonstrated with fantastic imagery of the catholic church in visceral darkened colours. When when Dracula appears in all his fiery glory and destroys the city of Targoviste, you actually find yourself struggling to identify with the human victims, do they not deserve it for their actions?
By the end of this episode you are shown in exquisite detail just how good a video game adaptation can be. They can be beautiful, well written and incredibly satisfying stories in their own right.
