10 Anime That Are Way Better Than Their Titles Make Them Sound
4. Afro Samurai
For how silly it sounds at first, the title at least perfectly describes this anime's protagonist - a black samurai with thick, long hair in an afro. Another awe-inspiring offering from Studio Gonzo, this anime mini-series was so popular that it also got an animated TV film, a video game, and has a live action feature film on the way.
This stylish, visually stunning anime takes inspiration from Western hip-hop but lands itself in a distinctly feudal Japanese setting, with some added futuristic twists. The eponymous Afro is a quintessential lone swordsman who wears the Number 2 Headband, constantly challenged by others who wish to claim it. In this world, only the Number 2 can challenge the Number 1, whose headband is said to hold immense power - though Afro's motivation is revenge, since the current Number 1 murdered his father, the former Number 1.
Unfortunately for Afro, while he's the only one who can challenge Number 1, everyone can challenge him. Fortunately, he's got the skill to back his status.
Unique to most anime, this show's soundtrack features work by RZA of Wu-Tang Clan fame, and the English dub features Samuel L. Jackson in the lead role.
