10 Assassination Attempts That Were Shown On Television

4. Jarallah Omar

Jarallah Omar was the deputy secretary-general of the Yemeni Socialist Party, strongly opposed to the Yemeni administration at the time. Omar had a lengthy involvement in his country's tumultuous history, living as a political prisoner for three years and acting as a guerrilla fighter during the civil war between North and South Yemen.

Shortly after addressing the annual congress of the Islamic Reform Party in 2002, Omar was assassinated by an Islamist hardliner. Omar was shot twice in the chest only minutes after his broadcast speech, with the sound and aftermath captured on Yemen TV.

The 26-year-old assassin, named Ali Ahmad al-Jarallah, was immediately arrested, and sentenced to death the following year.
