10 Awesome Easter Eggs Hidden In TV Opening Titles
10. George R. R. Martin's Turtle Sigil - Game Of Thrones
Game of Thrones' opening title sequence is so visually majestic you might even be tempted to sit through it every time you watch an episode, and eagle-eyed viewers might've noticed that each credited name is accompanied by a distinctive sigil.
While these sigils are recycled through the cast and crew, several of them have a specific meaning for the person they're assigned to. For instance, the editor will always have a sigil bearing two swords, referring of course to the cuts that form the cornerstone of editing.
But the most personal sigil is that given to Thrones creator George R.R. Martin, and while at first glance it might look like the D-pad of a video game controller, it's actually supposed to be a turtle shell.
In Martin's own words, the turtle has a very special significance to his early life:
"Turtles have always been my sigil, I suppose. When I was a kid, growing up in Bayonne, NJ, I lived in a federal housing project, and we were not allowed to have a dog or cats. The only pets I could have were turtles. So, I had an entire toy castle filled with dime-store turtles. I gave them all names, and since they were living in a toy castle, I decided they were all knights and kings...and I made up stories about how they killed each other and betrayed each other and fought for the kingdom. So, Game of Thrones actually began with turtles. I decided later to recast it with actual human beings."
Though the turtle sigil is also used for a few other crew members, it means so much more to Martin.
