5. Dexter
First Episode: October 1st, 2006 Final Episode: September 22nd, 2013 This entry is a bit of a question mark. As you can see, our serial killer with a heart of gold has yet to arrive at his conclusion. Though completely different stylistically, it is somewhat significant that both Breaking Bad and Dexter will be finishing at the same time. When future generations look back at 2013, which show will they proclaim to be the winner? Which finale is going to face next years challenger, the phenomenal Mad Men, as it completes its last season? The smart money is on Breaking Bad. By far, it has been the superior show. While Dexter is filled with plenty of forehead-slapping, cringe-worthy beats, Breaking Bad is flawless. Dexter has a lot more episodes than Breaking Bad, and thats one of the ways it goes wrong. As enjoyable as Michael C. Hall and company can be, did the show really need to be eight seasons? So far, this final season has been relatively solid. Deb is getting her best material yet, and the addition of Dexters mother is quite interesting. But there isnt the addictive intensity that made, for instance, season four so great to watch. If they can keep it interesting, and if they have the balls to go all the way with the end, Dexter might be able to validate the status it has procured over the years. But frankly, thats the most it is going to be able to achieve. Though they both play baseball, Dexter is the minor leagues, Breaking Bad the majors. For Dexters finale to topple the end of Breaking Bad, Vince Gilligan will need to seriously drop the ball.
