10 Awkward TV Couples Who Were Hilariously Mismatched

2. Jay And Gloria (Modern Family)

Modern Family Jay And Gloria I didn't watch Modern Family when it initially came on the air, and when I saw the fourth or fifth episode I thought the fact that Jay and Gloria were married was a big twist that the audience wasn't supposed to be aware of. Little did I know that was the plan all along, Al Bundy found another wife that was way out of his league, even twenty years later. If Ed O'Neill was more of a John Slattery type old man (basically class and handsomeness) it would still be difficult to believe that Sofia Vergara would marry him, but the idea that this type of thing happens in a loving relationship is borderline absurd. Sure, it is implied that his money plays a part in their marriage, but the show insists that they truly love one another. I understand that love is blind, but does that necessarily mean that it also has to be deaf and dumb? Every now and again when I watch the show (which is less and less frequently now) I have to laugh that these two are even together. The fact that he has to strain to get across even the most basic emotions makes their non-traditional marriage a farce. Ed O'Neill and Sofia Vergara are good enough actors that there emotions come off as realistic, but the writing of the characters doesn't make enough effort to justify the relationship. It doesn't ruin the show that they are together, but Modern Family would probably be better if they took casting a little more seriously.
