10 Best Batman Characters That Didn't Come From The Comics

3. Condiment King

Harley Quinn
Warner Bros.

This was The Animated Series paging tribute to the wonderfully camp Adam West run as the caped crusader. There were some misfires in there (like the Sewer King), but this one strikes just the right tone. Better to be king of tomato sauce than feculant sewer water, it seems.

If you’re used to the sort of ominous, noir tones of Grant Morrison’s brilliant run in the comics, Condiment King frankly isn’t going to cut the mustard. He makes those sorts puns all the time, fully channelling the West days. However, he’s great comic relief and that silliness works perfectly as a counterbalance to the destruction and darkness often associated with the Bat.

He’s only caught after slipping on his own condiments, allowing Batman to finally ketchup. There’s just something whimsical about him; comics have been full of ridiculous villains since the start, and most of them fall by the wayside. Condiment King might seem daft, but he’s secured a place in Batman lore forever.

They occasionally add a slice of danger by having his condiments cause anaphylactic shock too. But just like Gotham City’s police when Robin tells them that, it’s hard for audiences to take him too seriously.
