10 Best BoJack Horseman Episodes Of All Time
4. Time's Arrow (Season 4, Episode 11)
BoJack never shied away from experimentation. Over the years we got some mind-bending episodes that pushed the envelope both thematically and artistically. Even for BoJack though, 'Time's Arrow' was a jaw-dropping experiment and a pretty big risk too.
We spent a lot of time with Beatrice Horseman throughout BoJack's fourth year, and 'Time's Arrow' provided the most context for why she was so awful throughout her life. By no stretch did this episode make Beatrice a sympathetic character, but it managed to transform her from an almost cartoonish (yes, yes) villain into at least a pitiable character. Her actions feel almost understandable when you see what life decided to throw at her, and take away, on an almost daily basis.
We come to realise that Beatrice was bitter not just because of BoJack, or because she was born that way, but because the deck was stacked against her from the beginning. BoJack never shied away from uncomfortable truths and in this case the truth was this: if you're a woman, chances are you're not going to have it easy in life.
As well as all of this, 'Time's Arrow' gave us a front row seat to a show that no one ever asked to see: watching an already fragmented memory unravel with every minute. The result is one of uncomfortable confusion and the episode demands that we make the extra effort to piece together precisely what is going on. The BoJack team took on a lot of challenges with this episode and succeeded with aplomb.
A lesser show would have fallen at the first hurdle.
