3. The Split

With Nicola Walker being one of Britain's honorary dames, viewers couldn't wait to see her reprise her role as DCI Cassie Stuart in Unforgotten this year. While waiting, they had the opportunity to see Walker in a very different role, as she starred as divorce lawyer Hannah Stern in BBC series The Split.

We're very much used to these glossy legal dramas from the U.S, but it's not really a genre we often see in Britain. The Split is definitely more grounded in reality than say Suits or Ally McBeal, although it's every bit as compelling. Law shows are ten a penny these days, but divorce law is something we haven't really seen explored in this much detail before, which sets this one apart from the rest.

What's more, there is a really great family drama at the core of The Split, as protagonist Hannah breaks free from her family firm to go and work for the more lavish competition - a decision which could prove fatal for her marriage as her former lover has recently taken a job here too. Conflict galore.

With so much darkness on television these days, The Split was truly a breath of fresh air, and here's hoping the second series is just as good.
