6. Seed Season 3, Episode 1
For those who complained that season 2 was too slow and did not have nearly enough zombie action, then this episode was a love letter for you. By season 2s end, we knew that Rick Grimes and co. would be heading to the abandoned prison, one of the most famous story arcs from the comics. The episode begins with a brilliant cold open that flips the shows standards on its own head. Those that said that there was too much talking on The Walking Dead were pleasantly surprised to find that there was no talking at all in the episodes entire first scene before the opening credits rolled. What it did establish was a haggard group of survivors, hardened by the long winter months, now led by a tough and uncompromising Rick who will not lower himself to having to eat dog food to survive. The group has become so cohesive and in sync that they no longer need to talk or argue before clearing a house or searching for supplies, they just take what they need to survive. This is further cemented once they finally get to the prison. The scenes of clearing out the prison yard and interior courtyard were some of the most ambitious and entertaining set pieces the show has had. This episode turned the action factor of the show up to eleven, going beyond anything the previous two seasons have had to offer. This episode has something for everyone: gruesome zombie kills, frenetic action, riot gear zombies, top notch effects, and truly creepy scenes once they get further deep inside the prison. It was also important to see how each member of the group has changed over the several-month gap between seasons 2 and 3. Everyone has become much stronger and more skilled at dealing with walkers. Lori is pregnant and guilty over it because its tearing Rick apart. The character beats are all there, but when there is a good set up and the stakes are much higher, we can just sit back and watch the fast paced action unfold in the screen. This episode also marks Michonnes first true appearance onscreen, finally gratifying many comic book fans wishes.
