7. Mother’s Mercy (Season 5, Episode 10)
The Ending: Olly tells John that a wildling knows of his long-missing uncle Benjen's whereabouts, but outside he only finds a sign that says "Traitor" before he is stabbed by Alliser Thorne. Four other men stab Jon, each uttering "For the watch", before Olly delivers the final blow, and Jon bleeds out in the snow.
Why It's Great: Okay, okay, Jon didn't stay dead, but don't deny how shocking this moment was.
The Night's Watch's betrayal of their Lord Commander was a shocking way to close out the season, which wasn't the best season of the show, but the final few episodes got back on track. This scene sent an otherwise meh season out on a high note, and of course it broke the internet and kept people guessing until season 6 arrived and Jon came back from the dead.
At least his fate in the books is still TBD.
