4. The Sandman

After literally more than 30 years of trying to get a live-action adaptation of his legendary comic made, Neil Gaiman finally pulled it off with some help from Netflix.

And even with sky-high expectations for The Sandman - which is perhaps the streamer's single most ambitious adaptation to date - fans were hugely relieved that it turned out to be such a faithful and well-crafted piece of work.

For starters, the fantasy/supernatural horror series is an eye-watering looker of a show, with every penny of Netflix's reported $15 million budget per episode visible on the screen.

It's a show that stays true to the spirit of the source while lovingly recreating precise panels from the comic, yet also makes a few welcome contemporary adjustments.

Yet the show wouldn't fully work without a shrewdly selected cast, and that it most certainly has with Tom Sturridge as lead Morpheus, David Thewlis' show-stealing John Dee, and Jenna Coleman's unforgettable Johanna Constantine, to name just a few.

Given the many ways The Sandman could've failed when heading to the small screen - just look at Netflix's recent Cowboy Bebop adaptation - to call this a triumph is quite the understatement indeed.
