10 Best Netflix Original Horror Series You Need To Watch
1. The Haunting Of Hill House
Giving any other series the number one place would just feel wrong.
Loosely adapted from Shirley Jackson's classic horror novel of the same name, Mike Flanagan's series follows the story of the Crain family. The narrative flips back and forth between the past, when they lived in the titular haunted Hill House, and the future where they must deal with the trauma resulting from their short stay there.
Not to be hyperbolic, but The Haunting of Hill House isn't just Netflix's best horror series, but possibly its best series period. Haunting stories are no stranger to addressing grief and trauma, but very few, if any have done it with as much empathy and heart-stopping fright as Flanagan's adaption.
Above everything else, what makes the show so brilliant is the way in which it handles its characters. Each family member is on their own personal road to recovery from the pain inflected upon them from their past. Both as a unit and as individuals, the Crain's arcs are not linear, as that's not the way reality works. Instead, they face as many setbacks as they do instances of growth, creating a feeling of legitimacy rare in the world of horror.
Hill House is the kind of show you won't forget, but wish you could so you'd have the chance of experiencing it for the first time again. It's just that good.
