10 Best New TV Shows Of 2017
6. Legion
Superheroes are now as prevalent on the small screen as they are on the big one, with both DC and Marvel having a number of hit shows across various networks. There's the four-show Arrowverse, the six-show Netflix Marvel Universe, ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Inhumans, Hulu's Runaways, and Fox's Gotham and The Gifted.
It's a crowded marketplace, but somehow FX delivered a truly different entry earlier this year with Legion, which came from the genius mind of Fargo creator Noah Hawley and starred the superb Dan Stevens in its lead role. It's sort-of related to the X-Men, with the word "mutant" getting the occasional mention, but for the most part you'd have no clue it was connected to comic books of any kind, such is the unique sensibility Hawley brings to the show.
Centring on Steven's David Haller, a mutant with schizophrenia who has spent his life in and out of care, the show frequently blurs the line between the truth and friction as we go inside his head for a story that's as much about mental health as it is superpowers. This is a study of its character, with Stevens in supreme form as the tortured David, a difficult persona to capture yet never anything less than captivating.
He has able support from Rachel Keller as Syd, who is ridiculously likeable and tragic, while Aubrey Plaza's demented performance steals every scene she's in. There is a wider mystery at play, but mostly the show soars on its characters, their minds, and the kaleidoscopic blend of 60s and 70s visuals.
