While one series created by Bryan Fuller has been a little mixed - partly due to his leaving the project - another completely flourished, and Star Trek: Discovery's loss is certainly American Gods' gain. The show, an adaptation of Neil Gaiman's epic novel, is dripping with Fuller's trademark stylings, from its bold, fantastical colour palette to its macabre trappings and abstract storytelling.

Taking roughly the first third of Gaiman's novel, the series essentially serves as a two-hander road trip that is largely faithful to the book, but expands the source material in unexpected (and wonderful) ways. The parts stripped from the page, which focus on the perfectly cast Ricky Whittle as Shadow and Ian McShane as Mr Wednesday, are mysterious, exciting, and bring Gaiman's work to stunning life. The new additions, meanwhile, exist to flesh out the character of Laura Moon (Emily Browning) who, rather than the sporadic appearances she has in the text, becomes the very heart of the show.

It's among the weirdest shows of the year, but the characters and engaging plot make it work, and it does, of course, look absolutely gorgeous. It becomes a story about the power of faith, the importance of immigration, and a relevant road trip across the United States. It can sometimes get a little confusing, but it's always brilliant to watch.
