10 Best Performances In Angel
1. Alexis Denisof - Wesley Wyndam-Pryce
But the best overall performance on Angel has to go to Alexis Denisof, for his role as the fascinating Wesley Wyndam-Prcye. A Watcher in Buffy who moved over to Angel after the death of Doyle, Wesley starts the show off as pompous, awkward and, to put it lightly, a bit of a wimp.
But fast forward a few seasons - in which he is betrayed by his friends, has his throat slit, sees numerous friends die or turn evil - and Wesley is a gruff, tough, controlled man and the most compelling character in the show.
Wesley's arc from dithering Watcher to hard-as-nails demon fighter and leader rivals the arcs of Spike, Fred and Cordelia, and it's a testament to the sheer talent of Alexis Denisof that the character is believable in every stage of his development. And all of the aforementioned events actually take place before the final season, which sees Wesley and Fred finally fall in love only for Fred to die, sees Wesley kill his "father" to save Fred, and sees him die in the group's final crusade against evil. His death is an emotionally draining affair, as his is phenomenal performance in "A Hole in the World".
Denisof never misses an opportunity to be the best performer with the best character in the room, and with everything he went through in his 110 episode tenure, it's impossible to think of an actor who pulled off their role with more success.
