10 Best Performances In Better Call Saul
7. Rainer Bock (Werner Ziegler)
In the Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul universe, there’s seldom such thing as a purely good person, but Werner Ziegler comes pretty close. Yes, he was involved with the construction of a ginormous underground methamphetamine lab, but Werner was a kind soul, dedicated to his wife, and one of the few people Mike Ehrmantraut might call a friend.
Rainer Bock made a great deal out of a six episode run on the show. Werner was smart, capable, and honest, and Bock’s performance captured the qualities of a character who was well liked by all.
His scenes with Jonathan Banks as Mike were some of the best for the lead actor, who had great chemistry with Bock. He played Werner as easy going and non-judgemental, a man who understood the grimy world he was getting himself into, but was graceful and wise enough to refrain from passing comment (not unlike Gale Boetticher in that regard, and with a similar fate awaiting).
Bock was a hugely charming presence, as well as a source of levity in an increasingly dark show. He made it a real tragedy to watch a good man writing his own death warrant.
