Watching a gang of five unapologetic narcissists destroy everything and everyone in their path may not sound like enjoyable viewing, and the fact that Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia makes that premise hilarious is in large part a credit to its great cast.

Each cast member revels in the awfulness of their characters and never shies away from being ugly or unappealing- often both physically and morally. This cast in particular feels like a cohesive unit rather than five individual performers each doing their own thing.

One of the shows’ chief sources of hilarity are the scenes of ‘the gang’ together, engaging in crude, explosive arguments that feel chaotic and heavily improvised, yet more realistic than most stuff seen on television. However, amidst the chaos, each performer is able to play the voice of reason when the story requires, lending the cast a flexibility that has helped it maintain its quality for 13 seasons.

The inclusion of Danny DeVito in the second season could have thrown the balance of the show off, but he integrated seamlessly into the cast and provided a freshly hilarious parental dynamic for the show to mine for laughs. The fact that McElhenney, Day and Howerton are also the writers of the show is even more impressive and means that they can write towards their strengths as actors.

Bonus points to this cast for playing some pretty out-there stuff, from musical numbers to cross dressing to hard drug use. That’s without mentioning the hilariously disgusting, bizarre things that DeVito does on this show on a regular basis.
