10 Best Sitcom Casts Of The 21st Century (So Far)

6. Arrested Development

Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia
Fox

Arrested Development may not attract the same critical acclaim and viewer worship that it did during its original run in the 2000s, however the cast of the show is still an undoubtedly impressive ensemble of some of the finest comedic actors working today.

Jason Bateman gained a career playing the straight-laced foil to absurdity, based on his hilarious and crucial work as Michael Bluth in Arrested Development. Bateman plays Michael with just the right amount of exasperation, and imbues him with just enough absorption and obliviousness (especially in his interactions with his son) to illustrate that although Michael is the best of a bad bunch, he is still a Bluth through and through.

Portia de Rossi may not always receive the same recognition or plaudits as some of her co-stars, but her work here is brilliant and underrated. She plays Lindsay’s shallowness and vanity to hilarious effect, whilst keeping the humanity which makes it believable that Michael would want to stay with the family.

Tony Hale, Will Arnett, Jessica Walter and Jeffrey Tambor are seasoned comic veterans all playing variations of notes they have played elsewhere, but absolutely perfecting them here. Michael Cera and Alia Shawkat have considerably less showy roles than the rest of the cast, however their understated comic performances provide a nice contrast to the high level absurdity of the rest of the cast.

Most importantly, this cast effortlessly keeps up with the breakneck speed of the comedy of the show and embraces the heightened tone that made Arrested Development so popular and ground-breaking in the first place.
