10 Best Stand-Up Comedy Specials Of The Last Decade On Netflix
8. Bo Burnham: Make Happy
There are some who hold a bias against musical comedians, suggesting these performers of using instruments as a crutch, to make up for sub-par material. This is not the case in Make Happy, Bo Burnham's second Netflix special, which was released in 2016.
Burnham is his usual quirky self, and in Make Happy, his talents are on full display. He combines musical ability, a unique use of pre-recorded audio- often used to represent disembodied voices- and his a visible disdain for the audience to great comedic effect. What pushes Burnham's special into the top ten is its layers and depth.
While the sarcasm is heavy and evident in his songs Straight, White Man and his version of a country song, his performance begins to turn darker towards the end, as Burnham becomes self-reflective, alluding to his battles with anxiety and mental health. From his opening sequence dressed as the sad clown to his final song, addressing the audience through song and asking if they are happy, Burnham produced a creative, funny, and powerful stand up comedy special in Make Happy.
Recently, the 29-year-old comedian, who rose to fame as a controversial teen YouTube star, has been spending time on the other side of the camera. Since Make Happy, Burnham has gained praise and accolades for directing and writing the film Eighth Grade. He has also directed Jerrod Carmichael's stand-up special 8 and Chris Rock's Netflix hour Tamborine.
Speaking of which...
