9. We Are Lady Parts - "Earth Natives"
Nida Manzoor’s sitcom takes a little while to warm up, but after it gets over its inelegant table setting pilot, it’s a vibrant and important series depicting young Muslim women in situations rarely seen on TV. Here, we see PHD student Amina join Lady Parts, the titular punk band that allows her a freedom and release from the pressures of her everyday life.
By episode three Amina is attempting to overcome the nerves that have plagued her since she was a youngster and throwing herself into her friendship with the group, comprising four women who, while of the same faith, don’t hold themselves to nearly the same pressures as she does.
The scenes in which Amina is finally accepted by the group, and more importantly when she embraces this new way of living, are delightful, as are the scenes in which the fledgling band performs - the members are all actually playing, and it shows; this is a realistic depiction of life in a garage band.
We Are Lady Parts is a show about life and faith that never makes too much of its representation. They’re great characters played with real charm, and this is where it really comes together.
