10 Best TV Gangsters Of All Time

2. Enoch 'Nucky' Thompson - Boardwalk Empire

Ga6 Based loosely on a historical figure of the same name, Enoch 'Nucky' Thompson is at the helm of the bootlegging empire run off the Atlantic City boardwalk. At the beginning of the show he is shown trying to balance being a legitimate city official with his criminal activities. His strong suit is manipulation, and he is frequently seen playing the long game to ensure that he comes out ahead. As the narrative progresses however, he is forced to get his hands dirty which leads to pain and suffering for those he cares about. He is a ruthless businessman who, while generally successful in his endeavors, is very unhappy. There isn't much that can cheer up Nucky, he tries to fill the void with a surrogate family but that collapses and his numerous mistresses don't offer much lasting happiness, when they're not being blown up. The only thing that really seems to bring him any joy is outmaneuvering his opposition whether through cunning or force. There is something tragic about the character that Steve Buscemi is able to portray phenomenally. While he may put out a strong front he's clearly been affected by an abusive childhood which, coupled with his ruthless ambition has strained the already tense relationship he has with his remaining family. With season four just finished in the US who knows what the next one will bring for Nucky Thompson and Atlantic City? While I can't offer answers, I can guarantee it will be compelling viewing.
