10 Best TV Performances Of 2017 (So Far)

1. Carrie Coon - The Leftovers

If not for my own somewhat arbitrary rule, Justin Theroux would've featured on this list already. As it is, however, there's only room for one star of The Leftovers' beautiful final season, and in that case it absolutely has to be Carrie Coon.

Coon was also excellent this year on Fargo, playing Gloria Burgle, but in The Leftovers she gives a performance that is truly special. Her Nora Durst is a centre of truth in this often murky, bizarre world, and Coon's performance is an emotionally shattering one.

It helps that a lot of the final season - and certainly the incredible season (and series) finale - is built around Nora, but it's still up to Coon to deliver. She does so with a performance that burns with a quiet intensity; an absolute focus that helps make her the show's most human and relatable character.

We see her once again wrestle through grief, loss, befuddlement, desperation, and a sense of acceptance, and Coon is completely magnetic as she goes through all this. It's a riveting performance that makes you ache not just for her, but with her; you can't look away when she's on-screen, and similarly won't be forgotten anytime soon, that powerful final close-up monologue burned into our retinas and souls.

Who do you think has given the best TV performance of 2017 (so far)? Let us know down in the comments.
