10 Best TV Pilot Cliffhangers Ever
5. Utopia - I Am Jessica Hyde
Killed off well before its time - and briefly resurrected as a terrible American reboot - Utopia was a snarling beast of a show that really threw all its taboo-breaking cards on the table.
The series followed a group of comic book conspiracy theorists being hunted by a merciless shadowy organisation over a rare, one of a kind comic book. The comic book in question held the secrets to a worldwide eugenics conspiracy and, with plenty of death, torture and child murder along the way, there was very little in the way of boundaries with this completely one-of-a-kind show.
The very first episode sees two ruthless hitmen in pursuit of a mysterious Jessica Hyde. Given the strange demeanour of these men, we’re led to believe this person is either a codename for something or a larger player who won’t appear until much later in the show.
Surprise! After a wild ride of a first episode that saw our heroes drink pints, shag in a doomsday bunker and get an eye dug out with a spoon, the mysterious Jessica Hyde simply walks up to the characters and casually declares herself to be the woman in question.
After this reveal, you felt compelled to see more. It’s a crying shame this gem of a show was ultimately cancelled.
