10 Best TV Shows Of 2016 (So Far)

7. Catastrophe

Ok, another slight tweak to the rules here, because Catastrophe's second season aired in the UK last year, although it didn't arrive with much fanfare. Indeed, coming just a few months after its brilliant debut season, it rather slipped under the radar, because you generally don't expect a second season to come around this quickly (indeed it was initially supposed to air early 2016). Thankfully, its US release only happened in April, meaning I can justify its inclusion here, and it's certainly worth taking the chance to revisit it and celebrate it again.

Coming from Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney, the rom-sitcom is a very true-to-life look at relationships when you're a little bit older. There's no glossy sheen here, instead it's awkward fumbles, pointless arguments, and gross-out moments. But underneath it all, layers of true affection. Season 2 skips the story ahead a couple of years, meaning we don't see them in the immediate aftermath of the birth. The show is about how parenthood changes their relationship; tempers are shortened, the fights get worse, but the love between the pair only grows stronger.

Delaney and Horgan have a ridiculously easy chemistry together, and they perfectly encapsulate all of the anger, all the frustration, but also all of the compassion that these characters have for each other at this stage. This is the kind of grown-up relationship comedy that Judd Apatow wishes he could produce. It's delivers brutal truths about relationships and parenthood, but also absolutely hilarious ones.
