10 Casting 'What Ifs' From Buffy The Vampire Slayer

7. Nathan Fillion

Buffy Kendra
Mutant Enemy

Fillion is already a familiar face and name to genre fans, his starring role in Firefly still what he is best known for. He also managed to appear in the final season of Buffy, in the relatively small role of Caleb the Preacher. What could have been, though, if he had been given the role that he originally auditioned for - Buffy's love interest and moody boy supreme, Angel.

In 2011, Fillion told Backstage that his Angel audition didn't get particularly far, but there weren't any hard feelings, especially after Fillion brought such gravitas to the big baddie of Buffy's final season. The suave actor - once named one of the sexiest men alive - has enjoyed a distinguished career since.

The decision to go with David Boreanaz instead had massive implications on the show. Last year, James Marsters revealed that the Buffy-Angel romance pairing was not originally a factor in the vision for the show. What swayed it was the obvious chemistry that Boreanaz and Sarah Michelle Gellar shared on set. There's no guarantee it would have been the same with Fillion - and just how differently could the first three seasons in particular have played out?
