This half a century-old chronicle of life in the vortex in the company of everyone's favourite Time Lord is approaching the tenth series of its reinstated run. 2015 saw The Doctor at the top of his game but 2005 was a period of transition. New fans were pitched the bizarre idea that their hero could reboot himself with a different face in The Christmas Invasion, as David Tennant replaced Christopher Eccleston in the title role.

On top of this fruity notion was layered the idea of a festive escapade for the evergreen TARDIS pilot, a tradition that has carried on every Christmas since. This meant anything even remotely connected to the season became a key part of the action, its zenith arguably being The Snowmen.

For Tennant's debut however it was all to play for, and writer Russell T Davies threw everything but the cosmic kitchen sink at him, including a lethal Christmas tree that spun so fast it could cut through walls, its branches laden with exploding baubles. Definitely one for the "whaa?" file.
