In case you didn't realise by now, I am a big fan of Rian Johnson's directorial work on Breaking Bad. While he only directed three episodes ("Fly," "Fifty-One," and "Ozymandias"), all three left a major mark on the show. This episode earned Johnson a DGA Award. In "Fifty-One," the disintegration of the White family is in full effect. This is subtly illustrated by the seemingly innocuous gesture of Skyler forgetting the tradition of making a number out of bacon for Walt's birthday. We realise that this episode only takes place one year after the pilot episode of the show, and it's amazing to contemplate all the changes that have occurred in such a short timeframe. The highlight of the episode begins with Walt's birthday party. Skyler, seemingly dazed, wades out into the pool as Walt, Hank, and Marie chitchat. She submerges and floats peacefully under the water for a few moments before the others realize something is wrong. The scene is beautifully shot, but it is also haunting to witness the toll that Walt's actions have taken on Skyler. Finally, Walt and Skyler have an explosive argument that concludes with a mighty zinger from Skyler. No matter what you think of the character, Anna Gunn rightfully won an Emmy for this episode. "Fifty-One" is an underrated episode that is overshadowed by the frantic and flashy train heist episode ("Dead Freight") that follows it. But what "Fify-One" lacks in action, it more than makes up for with beautiful cinematography, top-notch acting, and skillful directing. Memorable Quote: Walter: Wait for what? What are you waiting for? Skyler: For the cancer to come back.
