10 Criminally Underrated TV Sitcoms You Need To Watch
7. United States Of Tara
Comedy shows about mental health are a risky business as they're often treated with the subtlety of a teenager writing Harry Potter fan fiction. However, there are some decent programmes out there that handle the complicated subject matter well, and United States of Tara is one that deserves far more attention.
Tara (played by Toni Collette) is a middle-aged mother of two. She is also diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder, meaning she often transitions into alter-egos. The show follows her as she navigates life while trying to cope with the struggles of her condition.
United States of Tara is a wickedly clever dark comedy that tows the line between making you laugh and feel. It has received plenty of praise for its accurate depiction of the disorder, making it a outlier in a TV landscape often plagued with insensitivity towards complex mental health issues.
The show is also a star vehicle for Collette, who thrives as the titular protagonist. Her ability to jump into multiple characters is quickly impressive, but her nuanced and elusive depiction of Tara herself is just as complex and engaging.
Sadly, the show didn't garner a large viewer base, leading to its premature cancellation. But that shouldn't deter you from checking out this one-of-a-kind series.
