Tara’s death wasn’t the only controversial moment in Seeing Red. Midway through the episode, Spike confronts Buffy in the bathroom of the Summers’ household, and questions her about their relationship.

Angered by Buffy’s cold response, Spike charges towards her in a fit of rage and attempts to assault her on the bathroom floor. Despite being injured, Buffy manages to fend him off before he can carry out his intention. Spike – for all his faults – is usually one of the most enjoyable characters to experience. But in this situation, his dark side reaches its peak, and any fondness you had for him prior only makes this all the more awful.

The performances from both Sarah Michelle Gellar and James Marsters make the situation painfully vivid. Indeed, despite the absence of horror or gore, it’s one of the most frightening moments in the show. And due to how unexpected this scene is, it’s even more shocking when you watch it for the first time.
