10 Depressing Truths Bojack Horseman Will Teach You

9. Familial Blood Doesn't Guarantee A Relationship

The TV format has always prided itself on depictions of family. We are taught at a young age to care for those we are related to because that's what family does. In many cases, you are encouraged to overlook the flaws of your relations even if you find them to be off-putting and toxic. But Bojack shows us how you cannot rely on blood to keep a relationship working.

The connection between Holly Hock and Bojack is such an integral part of his development. He genuinely makes significant changes in his life to accommodate her and comes to rely on her presence. Unfortunately, as the show progresses, this relationship becomes strained because of how draining he is as a person. He lays so much pressure on her and barely gives anything back.

Eventually, it is implied in the heart-breaking letter scene of episode thirteen season six that Holly is no longer able to handle his presence in her life. The show beautifully doesn't show you the contents of the letter but rather the impact it has on Bojack.

This is an important truth, just because you share blood with someone does not mean that they have to care for you. You should know that a relationship requires work, no matter the circumstances.
