10 Disturbing Backstories Behind Doctor Who Characters

3. River Song

The Master Spyfall Doctor Who
BBC Studios

River Song was first introduced when the Doctor and Donna traveled to the Library. This meeting would be the first for the Doctor, but the last for Song. Because the two were time travelers, they would constantly meet one another out of order, which made each occurrence as confusing as it was exciting.

River's story is complicated since it occurred basically backwards, but she was born the daughter of Amy and Rory. Because she was conceived on the TARDIS as it traveled through the Time Vortex, her biology was the same as a Time Lord's. Sadly, she was kidnapped and taken by The Silence, who raised and brainwashed her.

This was done to instil in her a need to kill the Doctor, and it's something she ultimately did. Her upbringing was disturbing simply because she was kidnapped and made into a weapon against the Doctor, but she grew up alongside her parents, never knowing who they really were.

Ultimately, she did manage to kill the Doctor, but because doing so broke her mental conditioning, she was able to transfer her remaining regenerations into his body, saving him. The two would ultimately marry and have a proper goodbye shortly before the 12th Doctor regenerated.
