10 Disturbing Backstories Behind Your Favourite TV Characters

6. Peter Bishop - Fringe

Peter Bishop Fringe
FOX

Peter Bishop was introduced in the first episode of Fringe, and his backstory at that point was fairly straightforward. He was the son of Dr. Walter Bishop, and despite being estranged from his father, he was the only person who could reign him in enough to help the FBI.

Over the course of the series, Peter's backstory changed, and it had everything to do with the parallel reality from which most of the strange and unusual events originated throughout the series. His mother committed suicide when he was young due to guilt, which was the incident that pushed his father into an asylum.

Eventually, it was revealed that Peter wasn't from 'our' reality, and instead, he was from the parallel universe that was causing all of the problems. This revelation cleared up several dangling plot threads spread throughout the first couple of seasons of Fringe.

Peter was kidnapped by Walter after his son died. Walter learned too late how to cure his son, so he took Peter from the other reality to cure him, and ended up keeping him. Most of the problems raised throughout the show were a direct response to Peter's kidnapping and upbringing in a parallel reality he didn't belong to.
