10 Doctor Who Characters Who Don't Deserve The Hate
7. Ambrose
Ambrose is one of those characters you're supposed to dislike.
She's someone who challenges and opposes the Doctor's direction, which, most of the time, results in someone getting captured or lost, proving that the Doctor was right all along. These characters can be frustrating to watch, because you just want them to listen to the Doctor.
In Series 5's The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood, Ambrose ignores almost every instruction the Doctor gives, leading to some major repercussions. But she's also easy to empathise with, acting out of that most basic of human instincts to protect one's family.
It was a bone-headed move to kill Alaya and set the drill back up again, but hindsight is 20/20: put yourself in her shoes and we'd all have done the same to protect our partners, kids, and parents. Mistakes were made, but they were well-intended ones.
Supporting casts in Doctor Who are often squeaky-clean and lack development, but these moral shades of grey - and the valuable lesson Ambrose learns at the story's end - brought some welcome depth to an otherwise pedestrian two-part tale.
