For casual viewers, David Tennant’s cameo at the end of The Power of the Doctor was probably quite a surprise. But hardcore fans had already figured out how the episode was going to end – even down to the dialogue itself.

Tenth Doctor finales Doomsday and Last of the Time Lords both end with the Doctor exclaiming “What? “What?! WHAT?!” in response to something unexpected appearing in the TARDIS (Catherine Tate and the Titanic, respectively). The phrase also featured in the 2007 Children in Need special Time Crash, and in the deleted conclusion to Journey’s End.

As a result, it was inevitable that it would also be the first thing Tennant said when he reappeared in the show as the Fourteenth Doctor.

The Fourteenth Doctor’s other first line, “I know these teeth!”, was a callback to Tennant's first appearance as the Tenth Doctor in The Parting of the Ways, where he made reference to his teeth.

Also, it wasn't in the script.

“David added the bit about teeth,” showrunner Russell T Davies confirmed to Doctor Who Magazine. “That’s his line.”

When it comes to Tenth Doctor references in the upcoming 60th anniversary specials, this is surely just the beginning. We already know that Tennant’s most iconic catchphrase, “Allons-y!”, is set to make a comeback, but will “Molto bene!” or “Barcelona!” make the cut as well?
