10 Doctor Who Stories That Would Make Great Musicals

10. Let's Kill Hitler

The eye-catching title proved to be another excuse to delve into the River Song story arc, but just as Mel Brooks created a runaway smash with his adaptation of The Producers, Let's Kill Hitler is undoubtedly a production that could get Nazi-hating bums on seats. Brooks had the leader of the Third Reich wafting about like a hippy. Writer Steven Moffat had Rory Williams decking the Führer. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, Mel! So "who" would be suitable for the key role? No, not that of Adolf, though Simon Russell Beale would be fun. What about everybody's favourite Time Lord? Matt Smith has, of course, appeared with his tonsils showing for American Psycho: The Musical, but was noted more for his fine acting ability than his skill at deploying a note. Plus he's far too busy in Hollywood anyway, so which famous lyric-belter could possibly take his place? Well, isn't it obvious? Morrissey! The resemblance to Smith - comic book good looks, fine head of hair - is undeniable. He offered to represent the nation at Eurovision so why wouldn't he get behind a live mounting of Britain's favourite sci-fi export? Also his skills as a lyricist would be a major asset. "Oh Hitler, you command the Reich, But I'm here to say you're not very nice!" is the sort of thing he might sing as he boots the dictator into the vortex. Marvellous.
