10 Essential Binge-Worthy TV Dramas You Might've Missed
9. The Kingdom
Approximate Running Time: 573 minutes There's only one name you need to hear to get a good idea of what to expect from the Danish miniseries The Kingdom: Lars von Trier. Master of courting controversy and examining the horrific underbelly of human nature, this is his televisual masterpiece of the bizarre and the supernatural. Taking place almost entirely within the confines of the neurosurgical ward of Copenhagen's Rigshospitalet, The Kingdom is a surreal, often enigmatic drama with flashes of gallows humour and a complex plot which unwinds like a twisted and convoluted ball of yarn only to tangle itself up again just as you think you've figured out what's going on. In this respect The Kingdom is similar to David Lynch and Mark Frost's Twin Peaks - the mysteries it presents are as much to be marveled at as they are to be understood; the rhythms and textures of the narrative - and the eccentric characters encountered - food for thought in and of themselves. Prepare to be more than a little baffled.
