7. The Returned

Approximate Running Time: 464 minutes With so many great dramas coming from the UK and US it's easy to overlook the foreign-language output. As we've seen with Gomorrah and The Kingdom, though, there's some truly excellent television out there if you're prepared to read a few subtitles. One of the best French dramas worth checking out is The Returned - like Gomorrah it's based on a film, They Came Back, in which dead people begin to reappear in a sleepy French town. Apparently normal (they're certainly not zombies), the returning undead include a boy who was killed by burglars, a victim of a car crash and - to liven things up considerably - a serial killer. Their attempts to readjust to their highly unusual circumstances are played off against the shock and confusion felt by the living - it's perhaps not a surprise to hear that Stephen King is a huge fan. Catch up on the first season now as Season 2 will be hitting television screens this autumn.
