Thanks to Matt Groening, there has always been a connection between The Simpsons and Futurama, and the shows helped this by referencing each other on several occasions. From the Squeaky-Voiced Teen jumping off a cliff after Futurama was cancelled, to Bender eating the shorts off a Bart Simpson doll, it's clear both shows existed in each others' universes.

It wasn't until 2014, after Futurama had been cancelled for the final time, that the two shows had a proper crossover episode. Since the popularity of Groening's second show hadn't waned since its cancellation, The Simpsons decided to exploit this for an episode, bringing the characters from the 31st century into modern day Springfield.

What should have been an excellent episode, combining two lots of wonderful characters, ended up with a story that made no sense, wasting just about every character but Bender. Even Zoidberg joked that it was basically just everyone taking it in turns to say a line of dialogue, with no real substance.

This poor crossover felt like the show simply relied on the popularity of Futurama for its views, and didn't bother to put any effort into the actual writing of the episode.
