"Goodbye, Michael" is considered by many fans and critics to be the best-ever episode of the U.S. version of The Office, as Michael Scott (Steve Carell) leaves Scranton for Colorado with Holly (Amy Ryan) and says his goodbyes to his Dunder Mifflin co-workers.

This was about as neat and tidy an ending as The Office and the character of Michael was ever going to get.

Between Carell's terrific performance and his poignant final silent goodbye to Pam (Jenna Fischer), it was a brilliant culmination of seven seasons of character development.

And Michael's departure is precisely where the show should've left fans, dishing up an improved seventh season after the more hit-and-miss sixth.

But money being money, NBC allowed The Office to limp along for two more seasons sans-Carell, which demonstrated just how instrumental Carell was to its success.

Despite a bevy of guest stars being roped in to try and fill the void left by Michael's exit, the show never regained its dramatic or comedic footing, save for an hilarious cameo appearance from Carell in the series finale.

Michael Scott was the heart and soul of The Office, and without him, it just wasn't the same.
