Mr. Robot's incredible season four episode "405 Method Not Allowed" proves how powerful non-verbal storytelling can be, with the 49-minute episode unfolding with just two lines of bookending dialogue - one at the beginning, another at the end.

It begins with Darlene (Carly Chaikin) telling Elliot (Rami Malek), "We don't have to talk," before the rest of the story - centered around the pair performing a heist hack at a server farm on Christmas Day - transpires wordlessly.

Only in the final seconds of the episode do we hear another human voice, when Vera (Elliot Villar) confronts Krista (Gloria Reuben) and says, "It's time we talk."

In place of chit-chat, 405 Method Not Allowed is propelled forward entirely by action and text message communication.

The lack of verbalisation prompts the audience to focus more on lingering shots and sound design, ensuring that while Mr. Robot is far from the first show to attempt a dialogue-free experiment, the gut-wrenchingly tense end product is probably the most successful.
