10 Failed TV Series Pilots You Need To Watch

3. Fargo (1997 Pilot)

The Coen Brother's 1996 film is considered a comedy-crime classic nowadays, so much so that a TV adaptation was produced in 2014 to some skepticism. Thankfully, FX's adaptation of Fargo was brilliant, had its own story independent of the movie, and was more akin to Breaking Bad squeezed into 10 episodes and minus the blue meth. But what most TV viewers may not know is that an earlier attempt at a Fargo TV adaptation happened in 1997. Rather than create its own independent story with recurring themes and motifs from the film, like the current Fargo TV series, the 1997 Fargo pilot was a sort-of-sequel to the film with the same cast of characters. The role of Marge Gunderson was recast and given to a pre-Sopranos Edie Falco. As for how the proposed TV series was going to unfold, the producers were going for a CSI case-of-the-week type structure rather than the serialised nature of the 2014 Fargo adaptation. However, after the pilot was shot in 1997, it was quietly dropped with no known reason before the pilot finally aired in 2003 as a TV movie special. It would've been interesting to see where this version of Fargo could've went, but then again if it had gone ahead, the Sopranos would've lost out on Edie Falco's memorable turn as Carmela Soprano. https://vimeo.com/11674952

My life story is nothing special. I haven't cured ebola, I'm nowhere near stopping terrorism, and I'm still working on that climate change problem. Instead, all I've done so far is put a few hundred words together in an attempt to make people laugh. You can follow me at @Fry_ying_pan but don't be offended if I don't tweet back. It's usually because I've spent too long trying to think up a witty response that the reply window has closed.
