After suffering loss after loss, the crew of the Galactica grew impatient with the fact they could not get any new fighter craft to replace the precious few they seem to lose in almost every single conflict with the Cylon armada.

So Chief Galen Tyrol decides to put his deck crew's collective knowledge and experience into making a whole new kind of starfighter.

After an awful lot of thinking and redesigning to accommodate the dwindling supplies the human fleet had, Tyrol's crew puts together The Blackbird, which is later christened "Laura" in honor of humanity's last acting president Laura Roslin.

The Blackbird was a ship designed with speed completely in mind. With so few resources, the ship had to be made with more emphasis on reconnaissance than actual combat. The ship is also outfitted with black-colored composite materials that make the ship completely invisible to enemy radar.

The Blackbird was the fastest fighter craft in Battlestar Galactica's arsenal, and with its fully functioning FTL drive, can be declared as the fastest ship in the series.

Which of course meant that the ship was destroyed almost as soon as it was built, taking an entire Resurrection Ship with it. And with no more resources to craft another the Blackbird is the only ship of its kind in Battlestar Galactica, but was incredibly effective while it was in service to Humanity.
